1. New Software Notice alert!

The new Web Graphics Creator (version 4.0) will be out soon.

For now, version 3.0 is still active and works great on most Windows machines. It no longer runs on Macs using Lion or greater... (but the new version will fix this)

So hang in there! It's almost done!

Report eCover BUGS HERE!

    eCover Bugs - Oh My!

These are what I have found so far...

    1) In the Photo Realistic Module. Template #4, eBook (flat image)
On importing a back image using the white navigational buttons. It renders backwards. (this was previously reported in the forum)
Work Around: Don't show the back.

    2) In Art Module. when saving a project (FILE/SAVE PROJECT AS) if you re-saving a project, the program instead of REPLACING the original project it adds an additional entry with a double .tlc extension. (i.e. projectname.tlc.tlc)
Work Around: In Windows Explorer go to PROGRAM FILES/THE ECOVER CREATOR/LOGO LIBRARIES/MY ECOVERS and delete the 3 files from there and go back into ECC and save the project.

This is all I have so far.

    Best Wishes,
    Jeri

    Hi Marc,

    Photo-realistic Module BUGS!

Also the bug is still there when selecting the Left and Right Spines, Left Spine is being placed on the Right side and the Right Spine is being placed on the Left side...

If you use the Tool Bar to load a Left or Right Spine from the Spine & Sides directory they are placed horizontal not vertical.

    Enjoy

    Ah!
    You're right Homey!

I completly missed this little glitch.
I think I know what the problem is - I'll see if I can update this.

    Shadow and Mirror Bug!

    Hi Marc,

Ok I have been exploring this more...

The only way that a design will display the Shadow and Mirror is if under the environment options you show the floor then export it as a .jpg but then you have the floor showing in the image.

We need to have the shadow and mirror displayed in all image formats unless we turn it off. Also we need these displayed with the background transparent.

    Thank you

Bugs - Spiral and Group CDs

    eGreetings,

    1) When in Photo Realistic and using the Spiral Book.
If you right click and choose ROTATE the Spiral Book will stand up. But it is upside down.
Work Around: Leave it laying flat.

    2) I am having a very difficult time trying to insert CD Disk images into the CD template and the CD Group template. The CD Group template is the worst.
Work Around: Don't open template so that you can see the disk pop up.

    Best,
    Jeri

Rendering in the Mac version, using the photorealistic option, causes the program to lock up. The jpg file gets created, but the program locks up.

I hold down the mouse button to stop the rendering, but it doesn't work.

I end up having the quit the program.

Not sure if you can with a mac but my lock up problem stopped after choosing a different (opengl) render engine. It's an option in the windows version.

    Hi HomeBiz,
first of all, thanks for the time you take to point out the bugs and document them.
It is the only way to further enhance and tidy up any software, if the users express the problems and bugs they find.

Let me first introduce myself, my name is Alex da Franca, I worked on the 3-D modul and thus I may have some answers for you from 'the inside' :-)
Please excuse my poor english, as I am not a native english speaker you will need some phantasie througout my messages to guess, what my grammar may mean in english... ;-)

You are certainly right with this.
I put this 'background transparent' feature in very late in the game and left it somewhat 'undocumented' myself, as there is no real user interface, other than 'knowing the trick' of naming the out .png.

I didn't think that it would be necessary to export with shadows and mirrors but still transparent, as you can hide the floor and freely choose a color for the background.

Technically it is somewhat difficult to merge the both semitransparent layers (shadow and reflection) and still preserve the transparency so that the result will be semitransparent again and a solution can only be some sort of 'workaround'.

So I can't promise anything as of now, but will keep it on my radar.

because it gets in the way by accident, when you wanted to mouse-drar to rotate/pan/zoom ?
or are there other reasons for this request ?

    this is a naming quirk.
we will correct it in the next release.
In fact it is just a matter of changing the property myTitle in the .xml file, which holds some infos for each model. read below about the xml file.

there are some of these statements.
couldn't we consider right vs. left from the POV of the box or vice versa ?

what is meant by this statement ?

that is by purpose to give it a more 'plastic' look. We tend to use these kinds of 'tricks' in realtime 3-D to give the scenes a little bit 'life'. Remember, this is realtime 3-D, all these shadows and mirrors are kind of faked as we can't afford with todays hardware to raytrace render in realtime, so it is always some sort of trickery behind it.

I've skipped now some of the 'right side showing left side' things, as we will sort these out and fix it in the next release.

that is unfortunately a fact of life. As I said above, it is some kind of trickery as I cant raytrace the shadows and reflections. so bear with us, that we can only either choose to not mirrror the CD AT ALL (if the CD cover is open, or the CD is half out of the CD cover in this case) or to live with this quirk of seeing the CD 'through' the box.
this is a very annoying thing, that has always bothered us developers very much. It happens with all semitransparent objects in 3-D as they must be rendered in a separate step and it would again require depth ordering on polygon basis and much more subdivision (=> much more polygons) to determine which polygon is in front and which not, at the cost of a major decrease of performance.
We hope for the next generation of the rendering engine...

    great :-)
not much to fail, though, with this simple object :-)

    here are some more 'tidbits':

    you can change the
mapping on the textures in the xml files.

here is what it takes for each texture:

    <textureSize>point(512, 256)</textureSize>
<!-- should be power of two in both dimension (default =
    point(512,512)) -->

    <targetRect>rect(10, 10, 200, 200)</targetRect>
<!-- the rect where to copy the image into the texture image -->

    <mapmode>#scaleToFit</mapmode>
    <!-- possible values are: #scaleToFit (-> distort image), #fitInto,
    #fitwidth or #fitheight -->

    <bgcolor>"#FFFFFF"</bgcolor>
<!-- possible values are either a color as hexstring or #topleft
    (->color topleft pixel), #topright, #bottomleft or #bottomright -->

targetrect and texturesize shouldn't be changed.

the "targetrect" property is pretty much determined by the 3-D models
texture mapping. it depends on the models texture coordinates and there not much benefit on changing it.

the bigger the "textureSize", the higher the resolution of the texture on
the member, but the more VRAM the app will consume. default is 512x512
which is the maximum. IMPORTANT note: the value of "targetRect",
depends on the texturesize ! if you change "textureSize", you must
adjust "targetrect" to reflect that change.

    -------------

now the "mapmode" and "bgcolor" is interesting to tweak the appearance of the texturemapping, although IMO in most cases it is better to make the changes in the input image files.

the current setting is #fitinto, which means, that the texture is not distorted and will be scaled to fit into the maximum rect. as background color the color of the topleft pixel is used to fill the blank space, when the images doesn't fill all parts of the available rect. you can control these settings in the xml file. there are different modes for the mapping: #fintinto, #fitwidth, #fitheight and #scaleToFit (this is the default)
the background color is used, when there is blank space (if mapmode <> #scaletofit). It can either be the color of the topleft pixel, topright, bottomright, bottomleft or a color which you define using a hex value, like in html: #000000 for black for example.

    ------------------------

further you can see a property myTitle in some of the xml files. this is the place to change the title for the model which appears in the object selection menu. to fix the 'duplicate Software Box 1' issue for example, you would open the file 'boxshot.xml' and change "<myTitle>Software Box 1</myTitle>" to "<myTitle>Small Software Box</myTitle>"

    -----------------------

In some descriptions it seems, that you can only rotate or move the model, when pressing one of the hot keys, but the 'standard' way is to click on the tool icon and drag the mouse while holding the mousebutton pressed, no need to press the hotkeys.
just in case this wasn't clear.

I hope I could shed some light on what is a technical limitation and what's just a bug/quirk.

Please feel free to ask, if you have further questions and suggest enhancements. The user experience *sometimes* differ from what the developer initially thought it would be ;-) and we can focus on your needs in upcoming releases more precisely, if you express them.

    best regards
    alex
