The three wise monkeys are not really three evils, but they are seen as advocates against evil. Together they embody the proverbial principles to "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil". The three monkeys are Mizaru, covering his eyes, who sees no evil; Kikazaru, covering his ears, who hears no evil; and Iwazaru, covering his mouth, who speaks no evil. Small statuettes of the 3 monkeys sitting side by side with their "hands" in the positions indicated above can still be found.
